A nationally coordinated criminal history check shows an individual's disclosable court outcomes (DCOs), sourced from the databases of all Australian police agencies.

Several employers and decision-makers in WA request that a person provide a nationally coordinated criminal history check before granting admittance or employment in a position of trust.

The nationally coordinated criminal history check is commonly used as a risk mitigation process and helps to ensure that persons in charge of decision-making provide a secure environment for their staff, customers and other stakeholders.

Nationally coordinated criminal history checks are 'point in time checks'. This means the check has no set expiry date.

A third party can request the check, like an employer or decision maker who makes the check valid for as long as the organisation deems it suitable.

Most employers and decision-makers in WA do not accept a nationally coordinated criminal history check that is older than three (3) months.

If you are required to get a nationally coordinated criminal history check in WA, there are a few options.

Primary Option - You can apply online through an ACIC-accredited body like ANCC. The information you will need to provide for the nationally coordinated criminal history check application includes and is not limited to:

• Name, D.O.B, residential address history;
• Contact information (phone, email);
• Identification documents as stipulated on the application form. (Commencement, Primary and Secondary ID documents, and a biometric self-photo (selfie) to demonstrate liveness).

Applicants are guided throughout the application process by instructions that are provided on the online application form. There is also Live Chat customer support available to all applicants.

The majority of checks (around 70 per cent) are dispatched to applicants within 24 hours after successful completion of the online application and informed consent form.

Around 30 per cent of checks will be automatically referred for manual processing by the national police checking service.

Checks referred for manual processing to one or more police agencies can take 15 days or more to get returned.

ANCC's system automatically dispatches results on the same day they are received. Applicants must allow sufficient time for their results to be processed if their application gets referred for manual processing.

It is important to note that ANCC cannot speed up the processing time for a check that gets referred for manual processing. The time it takes to process an application depends entirely on Australian police agencies.

The process of applying for a nationally coordinated criminal history check in WA through ANCC is simple. The process is as follows:

• Search and visit the homepage of the ANCC website. Press the green 'start a nationally coordinated criminal history check' button;
• Fill out the basic information requested on the online application form. This will include your legal name and the purpose of the check;
• Make payment;
• Provide other personal information as required on the application form;
• Upload, verify and confirm identity documents and biometrics;
• Provide informed consent. If the applicant is under 18, a parent or guardian will need to provide the informed consent;
• Submit your application and informed consent form;
• ANCC's verification staff (all based in Australia) will review your application and identification documents. If the application or identification is not compliant with government guidelines, the applicant will be sent a request for further information by email;
• If the application is compliant with government guidelines, the application will be forwarded to the national police checking service's system for a result;
• Receive the result via email. If the applicant requests a hard copy of the certificate during the application form, it will be posted to their nominated residential address.
